Names of Bands
22Jun07
The names of every band I’ve been in, starting from late high school and ending in early graduate school. (I have set the bar for “band” very low — the large majority of these groupings never played in front of anyone except themselves, and about half only played together once.)
- Dark Continent
- Logic Bomb
- The Lindbergh Babies
- Mr. Cattle Prod
- That’s Not My Finger
- The Cunning Prostheses
- The Mopes
- Bricuth
The Lindbergh Babies was a high school band. Everybody except the drummer wanted to play Damned and Cure covers, but the drummer only wanted to play Devo covers. And he was the only person we knew who had a drum kit, so we had to compromise. In retrospect he was right.
Bricuth featured Madison Smartt Bell on lead guitar.

How did you end up in a band with Madison Smartt Bell?
It was a Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars band. MSB taught there as well as at Goucher. He played blues solos on every song, whatever the genre. He was very good, though. If I do ever learn how to digitize cassette tapes (and that moment seems near) I will have access to a strange version of “Back on the Chain Gang” with inappropriate yet undeniably scorching guitar work by MSB.
