    Do you really think that post by Gowers counts as mathematics? To me, it doesn’t even rise to the level of bad economics.

    I thought it was fine, actually! Obviously the question “should we expect this will ever happen again” is not one that REALLY admits a quantitative answer, but what TG wrote seems a perfectly reasonable go.

    At best, it seems a little naive. At worse, it has the appearance of analysis without any of the reality. Perhaps it also seems “perfectly reasonable” to you when economists make predictions based on statistical models of the stock market. In TG’s defence, if I were sitting in the pub with TG watching an endless game of tennis at Wimbledon, I may be inclined to do a similar computation myself. However, posting the calculation on a blog suggests…well, suggests that the prediction has any merit whatsoever.

    I saw the play when it was in Ann Arbor a couple of years ago. From what I remember, though the math parts were, indeed, cheesy to anyone who knows some math, if you could ignore that, the play itself was actually not bad.
